Cimber takeover SAS route to London City and "fluffy snow" stops Eurostar

No sooner had SAS announced that it would close its route between Copenhagen and London City, than Cimber Sterling announced that it will commence flights on the same route from spring. Cimber Sterling will fly twice daily between with its ATR aircraft with room for 46 passengers. At the same time, Cimber Sterling will discontinue its Copenhagen to London Gatwick route, but will continue from Billund to Gatwick, which is flown twice a day, Monday to Friday.

Scotland’s largest airline, Flyglobespan has gone into administration leaving 4,500 holidaymakers stranded in destinations across Europe - including Spain, Portugal, Cyprus and Egypt and leaves thousands having to rearrange future travel plans.

Flights from Edinburgh, Glasgow Prestwick, Aberdeen, London Gatwick and Belfast airports have all been grounded by the sudden collapse of the airline. EasyJet and RyanAir are offering attractive fares for customers holding flyglobespan tickets.

Record amounts of snow on the US east coast has caused havoc on flights to Washington, Philadelphia and New York. Most domestic flights are cancelled, whilst international flights are taking off, but heavily delayed.

Snow also affected Eurostar this weekend, with 50.000 people impacted, some stranded in trains for as long as 18 hours. Trains have been cancelled for 3 days due to the "wrong type of fluffy snow" reports the Times today. Extreme cold weather was partly to blame according to Nick Mercer, Eurostar's commercial director, who continued the type of snow was partly to blame. He said: “It seems to be a strange combination of factors. It was the amount of snow, which was higher than we experienced before, it was lighter than normal, fluffier, and the temperature inside the tunnel and the humidity was higher than normal.”
